Flash Briefings
Somerset House reopening
What: Somerset House has re-opened to visitors. This includes the critically acclaimed free exhibition Mushrooms: The Art, Design and Future of Fungi extended through the summer, the magnificent courtyard, and the on-site café Hej (takeaway only). Re-opening plans meet all current government guidelines, which will be reviewed and updated regularly. It’s a beautiful building and is a popular film location. You may recognise it as the London home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire (aka Ralph Feinnes and Kiera Knightly) in The Duchess. It’s also been the private bank in X Men: First Class with  Magneto (aka Michael Fassbender) or the helicopter pad in London has Fallen.  When: Thursday 16 July Who: press@somersethouse.org.uk Link: https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/ If you like films in London set in London you might enjoy our Films in London podcast; a 20 minute episode with feature writer, critic and author Richard Luck looking at how the world's greatest city has been portrayed on film, taking in everything from the glory days of Ealing to the use of the modern metropolis as the background for blockbusters. https://www.londonguidedwalks.co.uk/015-movies-filmed-in-london.php
Whitechapel Gallery reopening What: Whitechapel Gallery will be reopening to the public on Tuesday 14 July with new health and safety measures in place. The spring exhibition programme, including Radical Figures: Painting in the New Millennium, Carlos Bunga’s monumental environment and Spain’s most important collection of contemporary art from the “la Caixa” Foundation will be extended through the summer. When: Tuesday 14 July Who: Megan Miller, meganmiller@whitehapelgallery.org Link: https://www.whitechapelgallery.org/ Before you go into the Whitechapel Gallery, look up and you will see a frieze of golden leaves, a permanent public commission by Sculptor Rachel Whiteread.
